What To Do When
You Miss a Session
Missing a session is not a crisis. How you respond to it determines whether it stays a missed session or becomes the start of a longer absence.
The only protocol you need
Three steps.
In this order.
In this order.
01
Don't compensate
No doubling up tomorrow, no punishing extra sessions. Compensation creates a feast-famine training cycle that disrupts recovery and increases injury risk.
02
Don't catastrophise
One missed session does not undo weeks of work. Muscle is not lost. Progress is not reversed. The only thing that matters is what you do next.
03
Show up as scheduled next time
Not early. Not with extra sets. Just as planned. Normal session, normal effort. The streak resets from here.
The two responses
One miss vs.
a pattern.
a pattern.
Spiral response
Miss one → miss week → restart
The missed session becomes the reason. Monday becomes the solution. Every month.
Resilient response
Miss one → show up next
One miss is isolated. The week continues. The habit stays intact.
Common Traps
The responses that
make it worse.
make it worse.
×
The "I'll restart Monday" decision
Missing on Wednesday doesn't mean Wednesday through Sunday are also gone. Every day is a restart button.
×
Doing twice as much the next session
Twice the volume on a body that wasn't trained the day before usually means one good set and a very sore three days.
×
Treating the miss as evidence you're not serious
Everyone misses sessions. Every athlete, every coach, every consistent person you admire. The difference is they didn't let one define the month.
The Naked Truth
The missed session didn't end your progress. The story you told yourself about the missed session is what ended your progress.
It happened. Let it go. Show up tomorrow. That's the entire response required.
