Building a
Training Habit

Motivation gets you started. Habit keeps you going when motivation isn't there — which is most of the time. The goal is to make training feel automatic, not effortful.

The habit loop
Cue, routine,
reward.
CUE trigger ROUTINE the action REWARD the payoff reinforces the loop
How to build it
Stack the deck
in your favour.
01
Anchor it to an existing habit
Attach training to something you already do. The habit loop starts with a reliable cue.
After morning coffee → gym bag packed. After work → straight to the gym.
02
Remove friction
Gym clothes ready the night before. Bag packed. Route planned. Every obstacle removed is one less excuse to not go.
03
Start smaller than feels necessary
Build the identity of someone who trains before worrying about the volume. Two sessions a week done reliably beats five sessions planned optimistically.
04
Track the streak, not just the outcome
Mark sessions in a calendar. The visual streak creates its own motivation — and makes missing one feel like breaking something real.
Common Traps
Why habits
don't stick.
×
Starting with too much, too fast
Six days a week from day one is a motivation burst, not a habit. Burnout arrives before the habit forms.
×
Relying on motivation instead of systems
Motivation fluctuates. Systems don't care how you feel. Build the system, not the mood.
×
No fixed time or place
Vague plans ("I'll go sometime this week") don't happen. A specific slot does. Same time, same place, every time.
The framework
Three rules.
For the long game.
I
Same time, same place. Consistency of context builds automatic behaviour. Your brain associates the slot with training and the resistance drops.
II
Make it non-negotiable, not optional. Don't ask yourself if you feel like going. Ask what time you're going. The decision was made in advance.
III
Give it 8 weeks. The habit isn't formed in two weeks. Commit to the experiment long enough for the identity shift to happen.
The Naked Truth

You don't need more motivation. You need a Tuesday at 6pm that belongs to training regardless of how Tuesday feels.

Pick your times. Remove the friction. Show up until you stop having to decide to.
