How
Hypertrophy Works

Muscle growth isn't magic — it's a predictable biological process. Understand the mechanism and you stop leaving results to chance. The gym is only one third of the equation.

The growth cycle
Three steps.
Every time.
01
Mechanical tension
Loading a muscle under stretch and contraction creates tension. This is the primary stimulus — without sufficient tension, the growth signal is weak. Full range of motion at challenging loads drives this.
02
Muscle damage & metabolic stress
Training causes micro-tears in muscle fibres and metabolic byproduct accumulation. The body reads this as a threat and triggers a repair response — building back slightly stronger than before.
03
Recovery & adaptation
The actual growth happens outside the gym — during sleep and rest. Protein provides the raw material. Time provides the opportunity. Skip recovery, skip gains.
The four drivers
What actually
moves the needle.
Progressive Overload
Gradually increasing the demand on the muscle over time. More weight, more reps, better technique — the body must be challenged to adapt.
Most important
Training Volume
Enough sets per muscle group per week to create a sufficient stimulus. Too little and nothing happens. Too much and recovery can't keep up.
Protein Intake
Muscle is built from amino acids. Without enough dietary protein, the repair signal fires but the building materials aren't there.
Sleep & Recovery
Growth hormone peaks during deep sleep. This is when protein synthesis runs at full capacity. Training without sleeping is half the job.
Most underrated
The adaptation loop
Stress, recover,
repeat.
TRAIN stimulus RECOVER sleep + protein GROW adaptation then do it again — slightly harder
Common Traps
Where the growth
cycle breaks.
×
Training hard, recovering poorly
You're creating the damage without allowing the adaptation. That's not building muscle — that's just accumulating fatigue.
×
No progressive overload
Doing the same weight for the same reps for months gives the body no reason to grow. Comfort is the enemy of adaptation.
×
Under-eating protein while "bulking"
A calorie surplus without adequate protein mostly builds fat. The building blocks have to be there.
The fundamentals
Three inputs.
All required.
I
Train with progressive overload. Gradual, consistent increases in demand. No challenge, no adaptation. That's the deal.
II
Eat enough protein. 1.6–2g per kg of bodyweight. Without it, the repair signal fires but the materials aren't there to act on it.
III
Prioritise sleep. Growth happens during recovery, not during training. 7–9 hours is not a luxury — it's the mechanism.
The Naked Truth

You can't train your way out of poor sleep and low protein. The gym is the trigger. Everything else is the actual work.

All three inputs have to be present. Remove any one of them and the cycle stalls. It's not complicated — it just requires consistency across all three.
